The nicest neighbors

We have the nicest neighbors. They have been so helpful with our renovating project. We have got spare parts like light switches and heard stories about how things used to be. One of the neighbors has lived here since 1956 and is the oldest original resident on the street. He was also building our house!

And last weekend, we got a front door! I have been in love with that door for two years. We have a "modern" door, looks like from the 80's. I've been saying to Panu countless times we need to find an original front door just like that. I've been searching the internet for the right one. We've also talked about having it made. But now the search is over, because our neighbors decided to change the door and donate the old to us! Of course we offered to buy, but they wouldn't have any of that. I'm kind of surprised how nice and helpful people still are. And very grateful.

Oh, and I might be a bit quiet for a while. I'm preparing for Kootut murut to move, hopefully very soon. But more about that later.

Livingroom paints and colors

I've been asked many times about the color codes for the livingroom paints so I thought I'd share them here too. The wall color I originally fell for was from this chip. But because we painted with Uula Into, we color matched it with Tikkurila Symphony color chart to get it as close as possible. The code is H388.

The chest of drawers is painted with left-over paint from the office. It is also Uula Into, but semi-matt (walls are matt). The color code is V370 from Tikkurila Symphony chart.



The floors were painted with Permo. The creamy white is Tikkurila 4737. I think choosing whites is the most difficult thing, but I'm very happy with the floors. Thank you Annika for the tip!

Sneak peek in to the livingroom

Now how wrong was I when I thought we'd have the livingroom pretty much renovated in two weeks? Very. But now, after 7 weeks we are almost there! The finish line is nearing and I couldn't be happier. There's still a little something left, like painting the moldings and getting the electrician to redo the wires. And decorating. Oh, how I've waited to decorate this room.

Out of all the rooms we have renovated, on this I've worked the hardest. Maybe that's why now I also feel the most proudest of it. Do you ever get that feeling? That you work and you work and you almost loose the sight of the goal at some point. But when you get there, it has all been worth it. Well that is how I'm feeling at the moment, even if we're quite not there yet.

We are getting there

We are definitely getting there. The goal: to carry all the furniture in to the livingroom next weekend. Except maybe the bookshelves, the paint might not be hard enough for them yet.

I even learned to saw, yay!

Livingroom progress and even more yellow?

Here's the original color chip for livingroom walls. First I thought it's light green but depending on the light it looks more like yellow. In all the photos it looks yellow for some strange reason. I thought I was making a green livingroom, but nah. Maybe yellow is becoming my new color of choice? How odd.



Before painting the floors, I cleaned all the cracks with a vacuum cleaner and knife. Nice stuff, 50 years old dust and dirt :)



And it's starting to look like a room! First coat of paint on the floor! It took me six hours and some help from Panu last night but it's done. Two more and it should be more resilient to dog nails. I hope. I have this theory that if you apply several thin coats vs. one thick, it won't chip as easily when the dogs wrestle and run around. Let's see if it works.

How to wallpaper with wheat flour and water / Vehnäjauholiisterin valmistaminen

I've received a few emails asking how we make paste from wheat flour and water, so I thought I'd share it with you as well. The site where I originally found the instructions doesn't exist anymore, but I will tell you how we make it. Wheat flour paste is the only adhesive we've used to hang wallpapers, newspapers, or most recently, the maculature paper.

Minulle on tullut sähköpostiin joitain kyselyjä, kuinka teemme vehnäjauhoista liisteriä itse, joten ajattelin laittaa ohjeet tännekin. Sitä sivustoa josta itse löysin ohjeet alunperin ei enää löydy, mutta kerron kuinka meillä tehdään. Vehnäjauholiisteri on ainoaa, mitä olemme täällä liisteröintiin käyttäneet. Olemme kiinnittäneet sillä seiniin sanomalehdet, tapetit ja makulatuuripaperit. Pinkopahvituksessa olemme käyttäneet sitä liiman kanssa liimaliisteriseoksessa.



I like the wheat flour paste because it's eco-friendly. There is no extra stuff added. Because it's a traditional method it's fits to an old wooden house like ours. Plus it's virtually free and it only takes less than half an hour to make. However, before using it to a whole room, I'd suggest making a test to see how it works for your walls and materials. We have had the oldest for two years without any problems. Still we usually make a test batch to any new room we start.

Itse tykkään vehnäjauholiisteristä, koska se on luonnonmukaista. Siinä ei ole mukana mitään ylimääräistä ja se sopii perinteisenä menetelmänä vanhaan taloon. Lisäksi se on melkein ilmaista eikä keittämiseen mene kuin puolisen tuntia. Kannattaa silti testata ensin sopivuus omiin seiniin ja materiaaleihin. Meillä on kohta kaksi vuotta on nyt vanhimmat olleet, eikä ole ollut ongelmia. Teemme kuitenkin yleensä aina uudessa paikassa testivuodat varmuuden vuoksi.

Instructions

And here's how you do it... You only need wheat flour and water, 1 part flour and 9 parts water (cubic measures / measures of volume). Bring the water to the boil and let it cool for a moment. Mix the flour with a small amount of water first and when the water has cooled a bit, poor it into the kettle while stirring it. Cook for about 10 minutes on a lower heat. I stir it constantly while cooking, but I might just be overly cautious.

Ohjeet

Liisteriin tarvitaan siis vain vehnäjauhoja ja vettä, 1 osa jauhoja ja 9 osaa vettä (tilavuusmittoina). Esimerkiksi 1 dl jauhoja ja 9 dl vettä - tai kuinka paljon liisteriä tarvitkaan. Vesi keitetään kiehuvaksi ja annetaan sitten jäähtyä hetki. Jauhot lisätään vähän jäähtyneeseen veteen sekoittaen samalla ja keitetään matalammalla lämmöllä noin 10 minuuttia. Pilasin yhden ensimmäisistä eristä, kun en malttanut odottaa vaan lisäsin jauhot kiehuvaan veteen. Jauhot kannattaa muuten ensin sekoittaa pieneen määrään vettä ja lisätä vasta sitten kattilaan. Itse sekoittelen jatkuvasti keittämisvaiheessa, ettei pala pohjaan, mutta en tiedä onko se aivan välttämätöntä.





In addition to wheat flour you can use other flours too. I believe they used barley in the old days, because wheat was more expensive. I remember reading that the coarseness/fineness of the flour makes a difference to how durable the paste becomes. More coarse makes more durable. (Or was it vice versa??) If anyone knows more, I'd love to hear it! Anyway, we just use what ever we have in the cupboard, which is plain ordinary, normal wheat flour. The same stuff we use for cooking and baking.

Vehnäjauhojen lisäksi voi käyttää muitakin jauhoja. Jos en aivan väärin muista, ainakin ohrajauhoja on käytetty ennen, koska vehnäjauhot olivat kalliimpia. Muistan lukeneeni, että mitä karkeampi jauho, sitä parempi pitävyys (vai muistankohan nyt aivan väärin?) Me olemme aina käyttäneet mitä kaapista sattuu löytymään, normivehnäjauhoja. Jos joku tietää paremmin, olisi mukava kuulla lisää.



All the images are wallpapers from the Pihlgren ja Ritola collection. I already had my mind set on Daalia (top image) for the minikitchen. But I guess it wouldn't be me, if I didn't second guess my decisions. For some crazy reason I went back to look around the site and now I'm undecided... again! Kirsikkapuu (cherrytree in finnish) is an all-time favorite, but I really really really like Perhonen (butterfly) too... And Daalia still goes together with the colors of the adjacent bedroom. Hmmmmmm! Which one do you like best?

Jostain hullusta syystä aloin selailla mallistoa uudestaan, enkä taaskaan osaa päättää. Kirsikkapuu on tietenkin ikiaikainen suosikki, mutta tuo Perhonenkin on todella kaunis. Toisaalta Daalia passaa edelleen viereisen makuuhuoneen väreihin. Jahkisjahkis jaa... Mikä teistä on paras?

Progress in the livingroom, slowly but surely

We started renovating the livingroom almost three weeks ago. I thought that by now we would have had all the walls painted and the floor at least one coat. But, as always, all kinds of unexpected things occur and have to be addressed. The room is still far from finished, but it's getting there and I like it more every day. Here are some snapshots from the renovation photo album.

The top wallpaper was soooo 90's. It had bumpy plastic surface so we had to get rid of it. All the other wallpapers we left on the walls, as much as we could, because the history of the house lives in them. Oh, and if you are like me and thought that accent walls are a new invention - then you are wrong! Our livingroom has had an accent wall since 1960's. Maybe not always the coolest color, but hey, you can't argue over matters of taste.


We found perfect wooden floor under the parquet and cork carpet! Yee-haa! It's going to be sanded and painted when the walls are done. Normally we would have evened out the walls with newspapers but to save Panu's back and time we used maculature paper from Domus Classica.



And this is yesterday. It doesn't look like it in the pictures, but the room is big. There's a LOT of walls to paint. Luckily Panu felt better yesterday and helped me with it. Now we are done with the primer and almost the first coat of paint. Second coat on the walls and two coats on the floors - then we can just wait for the paint to dry. Except I already have some DIY plans for those weeks too, hehe.

Paint, paint, more paint / Maalari maalasi taloa...

The renovation has proceeded to the point where it's just paint, paint, paint and then some more paint. And when I say paint, I mean that I'm going to be doing all the painting. Panu's back has gotten worse so I'm going to be doing all the heavy labour. But I don't complain, I'm so happy to have the room where I want it to be.

Olohuoneen remppa on edennyt siihen vaiheeseen, että luvassa on maalausta, maalausta ja vielä vähän maalausta. Ja kun sanon maalausta, tarkoitan että minä maalaan. Panun selkä on taas huonompana, joten raskaammat työt jää minun (leveähköille) harteilleni. Mutta en valita. Oikeastaan tekisi mieli skipata oikeat työt, että pääsisi jo maalaamaan.

Bye-bye living room

Say bye-bye to our livingroom. This is the last you will see of it, as it is now. We both have two weeks holiday and big renovation plans. Do you know how long I've been wanting to fix that wall?? This is the room where we spend most our time, because of renovation in other parts, so I'm sure you can imagine how frustrated I have been, lookin at that doorway E-V-E-R-Y D-A-Y for the last year. But no more! Things are finally going to change and after few weeks I can (hopefully) show you pictures of a room transformed.

Do you have any corners in your home driving you crazy? Or at least annoying you a teeny weeny bit? :)



Under thet parquet is original wooden floor that has been covered since early 60's. Fingers crossed it's in good condition. Yay! I'm so excited! Can't wait to show you the results.

Finally gorenje

Finally, after three months of waiting, we got our creamy gorenje. It's as beautiful as I remembered and makes walking into the kitchen so nice. If you remember how our kitchen was before, you notice we tore down one upper cabinet to fit the fridge. We fixed and painted the wall. But the ceiling has to wait until the proper kitchen redo. And who knows when that's going to happen...

Haaveissa keittiö / Dreaming of a kitchen

Meillä on haaveissa totaalinen keittiöremontti. On vain vielä vähän epäselvää, miltä uuden keittiön pitäisi näyttää. Uusi jääkaappi on tilattu Hulluilta päiviltä ja kellarissa on jo kaappeja odottamassa. Yhdestä vuonna -57 rakennetusta talosta purettiin alkuperäiset keittiönkaapit remontin tieltä, ja haimme ne tänne. Mutta kaikki muu on vielä epäselvää. Värit, laatat, järjestys, uuni, tiskikone... Keittiön laittaminen vaatii paljon tarkempaa suunnittelua, ei voi tuosta vaan alkaa häseltää (niin kuin meillä normaalisti on tapana).

We are dreaming of a complete kitchen remodel. It's still unclear as to how it should look like in the end. We ordered a new fridge a month ago and in the basement we have a bunch of kitchen cabinets waiting to be restored. They are original kitchen cabinets from a house that was built in 1957, just one year younger than our house. But apart from them, everything else is still a big question mark. The colors, the tiles, the oven, the dishwasher... It takes much more planning to renovate a kitchen, you can't just start messing around (which is what we normally do).





Tältä meillä näyttää nyt. Kaappien maalaus jäi viime talvena kesken, kun tuli kaikkea muka tärkeämpää. Ja jos aiomme rempata keittiön kesällä/syksyllä, niitä on kai turha enää maalatakaan.

This is how it looks like now. We started painting the cabinets last winter but didn't finish because something "more importart" always came up. If we are going to renovate the kitchen this summer/autumn, I guess there's no point in painting them now.

Tapettiangstia / Wallpaper Anxiety

En kerta kaikkiaan osaa päättää tapetteja. Panun musiikkihuoneen tapettien kanssa mieli on muuttunut niin monta kertaa, etten enää itsekään pysy perässä. Ensin mietin William Morrisin Comptonia, mutta en löytänyt jälleenmyyjää Suomesta. Sitten löysin Tapettitehdas Pihlgren & Ritolan William Morris- tyyliin tapetin. Harkitsin myös Kirsikkapuuta, niin kuin jotkut ehkä muistavat. (Tai sitten eivät, hehe. Siitä on jo aikaa.) Kirsikkapuu oli kuulemma liian tyttömäinen miehen musiikkihuoneeseen, joten päädyimme William Morris- tyyliin.

No nyt talvella löysin ihan sattumalta netistä Seinäruusun, joka myy William Morrisia, ihan sitä ihtiään. Bongasin sieltä Golden Lilyn, jonka kuviot muistuttavat melko selkeästi Tapettitehtaan William Morris -tyylistä. Veikkaukseni on, että William Morris- tyyliin on saanut vahvasti vaikutteita Golden Lilystä.

Seurasi pitkällinen, siis hyvin pitkällinen kamppailu alkuperäisen William Morrisin Golden Lilyn ja William Morris -tyylin välillä, jonka seurauksena tulimme siihen tulokseen, että Golden Lily on tapettimme. Parasta mennä suoraan alkulähteille, eikö vain?

William Morris- tyyliin ja Kirsikkapuu
In the style of William Morris and Kirsikkapuu

I simply can't decide on wallpapers. Trying to choose one for my husband's music room, I've changed my mind so many times I can't ever remember. At first I wanted William Morris' Compton but couldn't find a retailer in Finland. Instead I found a version in the style of William Morris from Finnish Pihlgren & Ritola. My second alternative was Kirsikkapuu (cherry tree) by them. Some might remember me pining over this already last July.

Well. Long story short, I was told Kirsikkapuu is too girly, must go with the William Morris influenced. Fine. I think it's gorgeous anyway. But then in the winter I happened to stumble upon a Finnish online shop Seinäruusu (means Wallrose) that carries Compton. I also found William Morris' Golden Lily that resembles the William Morris inspired wallpaper a lot. I ordered samples from both.

The result, a lot of thinking back and forth between the original William Morris' Golden Lily and the subdued Finnish version. (In the top photo Golden Lily is on the left and the William Morris inspired is on the right.) Finally we set our mind on Golden Lily. Best go for the original, right?

Kaikki suhteellisen hyvin tähän asti. Mutta maanantaina ostin Divaanin. Siellä oli aivan upea koti, jossa oli SEKÄ William Morris- tyyliä ETTÄ Kirsikkapuuta. Ja ne molemmat näyttivät tosi hienoilta. Kirsikkapuu on musiikkihuoneen suhteen unohdettu, mutta William Morris -tyyli... Se näyttää kuvissa niin kauniilta punaisena ja koko seinällä. Pääni on taas aivan sekaisin. Pitäisikö hylätä Golden Lily ja palata kotimaiseen William Morris -vaikutteiseen? Vai pysyä alkuperäisessä suunnitelmassa? (Ööö, no ei alkuperäisessä, mutta aikaisemmassa.) Toisaalta, mutta toisaalta. En osaa päättää.

Everything relatively fine so far. But, on Monday I bought Divaani magazine. And they featured a beautiful home with BOTH the William Morris inspired wallpaper AND Kirsikkapuu. Ok, Kirsikkapuu is out of the question for the music room, but the William Morris inspired... It looks so stunning red and on all the walls... I started second-guessing my decision again! Should I go with the original William Morris or the one influenced by William Morris? I'm confused.

Listoja ja eristeitä

Muistatteko tämän? Noh, portaikko on nyt saatu maalattua, lattia ja seinät. Seiniin meni loppujen lopuksi viisi kerrosta maalia, joihinkin paikkoihin kuusi. Sanon vain että huh huh. Tämä urakka sai minut katsomaan uusin silmin suunnittelemaamme talonmaalausprojektia. Olemme miettineet, että rapsuttelisimme lateksimaalit talon ulkoseinistä ja maalaisimme pellavaöljymaalilla tilalle. Portaikon maalaamisen jälkeen olen vasta alkanut käsittää, kuinka iso urakka se tosiaan on. Riittääköhän yhdessä kesässä tarpeeksi aurinkoisia päiviä?

Lattiat maalasimme vaaleanharmaalla Permolla. Täältä luin, että sitä on valmistettu jo vuodesta 1928. Valtaosa Permon perinteisistä väreistä on vielä samoja kuin Yki Nummen Permo-värikartassa 1950-luvulla. Meillä oli harkinnassa myös lattian maalaus pellavaöljymaalilla, mutta päädyimme kuitenkin tähän. Sillä on kaikkien Suomen mummoloitten lautalattiat maalattu! Hihhih, no ei ehkä ihan, mutta meidän mummolan on, ja hyvältä näyttää edelleen. Lattia pääsee kuitenkin hengittämään lautojen raoista ja jos se on säilynyt ihan hyvänä muovimattokerrosten alla, eiköhän se selviä Permollakin.

Do you remember this? Well, we ended up painting the walls five times and some of them six. Man it was hard work. It made me rethink our house painting project. We were planning to scrape the old latex paint and paint the outside of the house with linseed oil paint. Only now I realize how much work it's actually going to be. I wonder if there's enough sunny days, the Finnish summer is brief.

The floors we painted with light gray Permo. It's been manufactured since 1928 and most of the traditional colors of the color chart are the same that were designed by Yki Nummi in the 1950's. I believe Permo is what all Finnish mummolas have on their wooden floors. (Mummo means grandma in Finnish and mummola means the place where your grandparents live.) At least our mummola floors are painted with it, and they are still fine after all these years.







Maalausoperaation jälkeen oli aika eristää. Meillä ei talvisin selviä ilman villasukkia, lattiat vetävät melkoisesti. (Sanoinhan että ilmastointi toimii...) Tilkitsimme lattian ja seinien välejä pellavariveellä. Sitä saa muun muassa täältä. Hommasimme ihan kunnon 5 kilon säkin ettei heti lopu kesken. Täällä todella riittää tilkitsemistä. Panu paineli sitä maaliskraapalla ja puulastalla, sellaisella tavallisella keittiölastalla, kun ei ollut virallista työkalua.

After the painting operation was finished, it was time to add more insulation. In our house woollen socks are the must-have accessories, the floors are so drafty. I have no idea what this thing is called in English (help me out somebody, if you know) but basically it's linen and it's a traditional insulator. In Finland (and soon in most EU countries) you can get it here. Panu put it between the floors and walls with a wooden spatula, just a normal kitchen thing, because we didn't have the official tool.



Entinen asukki oli jossain vaiheessa vaihtanut taloon modernimmat kapeat listat, mutta löysimme yläpohjasta muutamia alkuperäisiä jalkalistoja. Samanlaisia ei saanut mistään tavallisesta liikkeestä, mutta rintamamiestalo.fin kautta löysimme Tillmanin. Heillä oli samanlaisia listoja valmiina ja samalla profiililla löytyi myös reunalistat. Teetimme Tillmanilla myös portaikkoon siskonpaneelit alkuperäisestä mallista, koska niitä ei ollut valmiina oikeanlaisia. Ne odottelevat vielä kellarissa maalaamista.

The previous owner had changed the mouldings into more modern narrow ones, but we found a few of the original laying at the attic. Any normal timber company in my town didn't carry matching ones but after some research we found a company outside Oulu specializing in carpentry that had mouldings with the right kind of profile. They also custom-made us panels for the staircase but those are still in the basement waiting to be painted.



Ja tässä vielä vähän kuvaa yläkerran porraskäytävästä. Minusta näyttää niin paljon ryhdikkäämmältä listojen kanssa. Listat voisi maalata vielä kertaalleen, niin ei naulat paista. Ja sähkömies meinasi tulla parin viikon päästä, niin pääsee eroon roikkuvista sähköjohdoista. Sitten näyttää vielä ryhdikkäämmältä, jee.

Here's more pictures with the mouldings. To me it looks so much better with them, it's hard to believe the difference. We still need to paint them once more to hide the nails. And the electrician promised to be here at the end of february. Then we don't have hanging electric wires anymore and it's going to look even better, yay!

Työn alla / Working on it

Tätä meillä on puuhattu jo ikuisuudelta tuntuvan ajan. Maalattu portaikon seiniä pellavaöljymaalilla. Ensin minä maalasin pohjamaalilla ja kerroksen pellavaöljymaalilla, sitten Panu pari kerrosta. Aikaa on kulunut, koska maalilla kestää päiväkausia kulua. Viikossa ehtii maalata yhden kerroksen. Toivottavasti enää yksi kerros riittää. Olisi mukava laittaa listat paikoilleen ja soittaa sähkömies laittamaan sähköt kuntoon.

Toisessa kuvassa näkyy muuten Renovan katkaisija. Niitä tulee portaikkoon kolme, koska emme löytäneet vanhoja 6-tyypin katkaisijoita.

This is what we've been up to for ages. First evening out the staircase walls and then painting them with linseed oil paint. It takes forever, because you have to apply the paint so thinly it needs several layers. And the paint takes at least 4 days to dry, so basically you can only paint once a week. We've painted one layer of primer and 3 layers of linseed oil paint and have at least one to go. Hopefully then it's done.







Makuuhuone (jossa ei tällä hetkellä nukuta) on sähköjä vaille valmis. Viereisessä minikeittiössä pitäisi tapetoida yksi seinä tällä ja porata yksi kaappi seinälle ja Ta-daa! Olisi ihanaa, että yksi kokonaisuus olisi ihan valmis.

Upstairs bedroom (at the moment no bed though) is almost ready. The electricity needs to be redone but then it's finished. The adjacent minikitchen still needs wallpaper and a cupboard on one wall, then it's finished too. It's going to be so great to have a complete space done. No missing mouldings or ugly tobacco-yellow electric wires, just all nice and finished.

Vuohia ja vuoria

En sitten millään malttanut odottaa, että saan koko keittiön laitettua. Nyt näyttää siltä, että kaikki muu menee tärkeysjärjestyksessä keittiön edelle (niin kuin kodin sähköturvallisuus) joten jatkan keittiö-operaatiota ehkä joululomalla. Sitä odotellessa pikkuisen kurkistusta uudistettuun keittiöön. Olen tähän mennessä maalannut yläkaapit ja kaakelit, jäljellä alakaapit ja järjestelyä.

Vuohitaulun voitin poppytalkin arvonnassa. Kerrankin minulla oli arpaonnea! Olen yleensä maailman huono-onnisin arvonnoissa. Taulu on Ryan Berkleyn vuohi fawn&forestilta. Ja eilen tuli postissa ihana leikkuulauta fine little daylta. En tiedä raaskinko oikeasti käyttää sitä...

Vähän on vaikea kuvata, kun on niin pimeää. Parolan aseman vinkistä viisastuneena yritin heilua pikkupeilin kanssa, mutta taidan tarvita lisäharjoitusta :)

Ok, so I meant to reveal our new kitchen when I'm completely done with it. But i can't wait that long! It seems it's going to take forever, first I must take care of everything else (like work and electrical safety). So here is a little sneak peek to the kitchen.

Yesterday I got the loveliest cutting board ever, from fine little day. And the Ryan Berkley goat I won in a poppytalk giveaway. I was extra happy since I never win anything!

Keittiössä on tapahtunut pientä edistystä. Yläkaapit on maalattu muutamaan otteeseen, ovet turkoosilla ja sisukset pinkillä. Tarkoitus oli maalata alakaapit ja kaakelit, mutta kaakelit ovat nyt tarkkailun alla, niistä löytyneen kasvuston vuoksi.

Tällä hetkellä työn alla on myös sähköjen vetäminen. Meillä on monenlaatuista valonkatkaisijaa, uutta ja vanhempaa. Haluaisimme vaihtaa uudemmat tällaisiin vanhemman mallisiin, mutta mistään ei tunnu löytyvän oikean mallisia. Olemme kyselleet läpi kaikki mahdolliset paikat, jotka vain suinkin olemme keksineet.
