Here's a sneak peek to one of the projects I was cooking up. You can see more in the magazine. That's also our new headboard, I've been dying to show you! It's a vintage door found at anno.fi (for those who speak Finnish or Swedish).

Beautiful packaging: Claus Porto soaps

Beautiful soaps

I just totally fell for the stunning packaging of these Claus Porto bath soaps when I saw them at Stockmann. We don't have a bath tub, and anyway my skin is so sensitive I avoid using scented products. But I couldn't resist these soaps. So instead of using them for washing, I'm going to keep them in the wardrobe for beautiful fragrance. I used to have incense sticks for that, but these are much prettier.

Morning mountains by Doug Matthews + some Photoshop magic

Morning mountains by Doug Matthews

I'm in awe of the new Morning mountains print by Doug Matthews over at L'Affiche Moderne. It's stunning, PLUS I feel it would fit perfectly above the chest of drawers I fixed. To be sure - and to convince the husbando - I did some quick Photoshop magic. Here it is, virtually in the livingroom, surrounded with the prints we already have.

Crazy shopping: Aalto Pendant lamp A330S

Aalto Pendant Lamp A330S

This morning I woke up way too early early to go shopping. A Finnish department store Stockmann has a sale twice a year called Crazy Days. Last spring we bought our gorenje fridge there. This time the A330S pendant lamp designed by Alvar Aalto was in sale for half price. I thought they might be in quite a demand, so I tried to get there early. The store opens at 8AM, I got there 8:04, and there was only a few left! Luckily they still had my color of choice. By the time I got mine paid, they had sold out completely. Crazy, huh?

Aalto Pendant Lamp A330S

This is what I would have liked to have: three brass pendants hanging above the dining table. But as Panu reminded me, our kitchen is tiny. Blah, blah, blah. He is always such a voice of reason. But, admittedly, he is right. So I only got one. Don't you hate when that happens? (I love you, husbando! ;)

More livingroom

Getting some furniture in the livingroom

We have got some decorating done in the livingroom. It's still quite bare and doesn't look lived in yet. It's because we are not living there yet. We still need the electrician to come, and we want to wait another week before letting the dogs in. That way the paint has dried a whole month so it should be as hard as it gets. I'm worried what dog nails will do to our pretty white floors.

Getting some furniture in the livingroom

We found the bookshelf a year and a half ago at a thrift store. It cost only 35 euros! (48 dollars) It has been waiting ever since for the renovation. Well, actually most of the furniture here we have collected from flea markets and thrift stores over these couple of years, and finally I feel like they have found their home.

Getting some furniture in the livingroom

The pillows are one of the few things we've bought new. The elephant pillow is from the London Cushion Company and the squirrel is by Varpunen. The Kartell Stone stool is a birthday present from Panu.

Getting some furniture in the livingroom

We also need to frame some art that's been waiting in the closet. I'd like to make a collage wall above the chest of drawers. But I don't know what kind of frames they should be. All the same, or a variety of different types? The images are all a bit different. All have some turquoise or green in them, but different sizes and shapes. Maybe if the matt and frame material/color were the same they would look more harmonious. But then, I don't know if I want harmonious!

Oh, and did I mention I ended up getting the Hay Hee chairs last summer? We brought them inside for the winter. (Yes, it is almost winter here.)

Hope you all have a wonderful week!

Vintage radio turned into a guitar amplifier

Vintage radio

We found this vintage beauty last weekend at the antique fair. It's a Philips radio from 1957. Panu has been looking for a right kind of radio for a while now, because he wanted to use it as an amplifier for his electric guitar. And here it is! Panu only needed to modify the instrument cable going from the guitar to the radio. It works perfetto.

Vintage radio

If you are interested to know more, you can email me for details. Don't try this with any radio though, because you might get an electric shock!

Vitriini by Iittala

Vitriini by Iittala

Vitriini by Iittala

images Iittala

Heyyyy, dear friends! I've missed you a lot! My little break has felt like forever, although it was just two weeks. But, on the other hand, it's been good to relax and spend less time on the computer. I've had time to evolve crazy plans in my head. Some of them I already put on paper... But more about them later!

The Vitriini glass display by Iittala is a recent impulse buy. I got the clear all glass one. It's not going to be treasure that I'll be keeping there, but something more prosaic... I'm going to put paper clips in it. Although I'm sure they will look magnificent too, because the display is so cool.

Hadley Hutton and a little break

Bumble Bee

Hei vaan, aion pitää pienen tauon blogin pidossa. Panulla on loma, minulla on töitä ja ulkona on kesä. Siksi yritän minimoida koneella vietetyn ajan. Sillä aikaa suosittelen, että käytte surffaamassa Hadley Huttonin kuvia. Minulle tuli perjantaina hänen Bumble bee -printtinsä. Eikö ole aivan ihana? Etsy-kauppa löytyy täältä ja hänen nettisivunsa täältä.

Hello friends, I'm going to have a little break from blogging. Panu's got vacation, I've got work and outside it's summer. That's why I'm trying to minimize the time spent on computer. In the meanwhile I recommend you go surf Hadley Hutton's gorgeous works. I got this Bumble bee print by her last friday. Isn't it amazing?! You can find her Etsy shop here and her website here.

Ihania kesäpäiviä!
I wish you wonderful summer days! (Or winter, if that's what you have :))

Melkein vintaketta / Almost vintage

I heart coffee

Taas tuli uusi Juhla Mokka -paketti kauppaan.

Again there's a new Juhla Mokka coffee jar in the shops. This year it's designed by Sanna Mander. The previous were Sanna Annukka, 2009 and Klaus Haapaniemi, 2008. I can't believe it's already a year since I dragged Sanna Annukka home from the super market. Time goes by so fast these days.

I heart coffee

Saa nähdä, montako osaa sarjaan on on luvassa. Olen ajatellut kerätä sen kokonaan. Meillä ei edes juoda tuollaista kahvia. Toivottavasti värimaailma pysyy jatkossakin saman tyyppisenä, muuten joudun harkitsemaan uudelleen.

Curious to see how many there will be in the series. I'm thinking collecting them all, even though we don't drink that kind of coffee. Hopefully the color scheme stays similar, otherwise I have to rethink.

Almost vintage

No okei, en ihan täysin fanaattinen ole siinäkään.

I actually like vintage inspired design quite a lot. Like these soda cans. When it comes to interior design, I'm more of a purist. I want our furniture to be either new or old. I'm not such a big fan of new home decor that is made to look vintage. If it's new, it should look new. Ok, I'm not totally fanatic about it, sometimes I slip. But it's some kind of basic principle I try to follow. What about you? Do you want your vintage to truly be old? Or does it only matter that it looks good?

Kirpulta ja kaupasta / Shopping and thrifting

Thrifted

I went a little bit shopping crazy the other day. The sun was shining and I felt relaxed after finishing two bigger work projects. The chair is for our porch. It needs little bit glueing and fixing but otherwise it's perfetto.

Pretty cleaning

I think it's great that now you can get cleaning stuff that actually looks nice. The Rice cleaning rags and the sparrow dish washing rag are sold by Colore in Oulu. They also have an online store, but I'm afraid it's only in Finnish.

Dumpling Dynasty sewing kit

Dumpling Dynasty sewing kit

Pah, miehet... :D

I was so happy when I found the Dumpling Dynasty sewing kit. It's just what I've always needed. Although Panu implied that I didn't know I needed it until I saw the kit. Men... :D

Shoppailua väreittäin / Shopping by color

Shopping by color

Shopping by color

Shopping by color

I don't know if it's a subconscious thing that when you shop, you choose things that match, even if you don't think about it. Or is it just that these are the colors of the season (spring!) and that's why I automatically chose them. Anyway, coming home from shopping I noticed all my purchases were matchy-matchy green or pink. And some yellow.

One fantastic thing I found was shelf paper. In all the granny furniture we have the drawers and shelves were covered with shelf paper. And not just any old boring shelf paper, but really cool colorful, patterned papers that look like they're from the 60's. They've been in such a bad shape I've had to remove them. But the shelf underneath has been in excellent condition (after 50+ years of use!). Now that I have the right kind of paper I can continue the tradition.

This porcelain milk carton by Seletti is not pink or green, but it's beautiful and funny too, I think.

Hullut päivät / Crazy days and Gorenje

New fridge

New fridge
kuvat / images: Gorenje

Last Sunday we got lost at Crazy days (a big discount sale twice a year) at Stockmann. And so it happens that we ended up doing major impulse shopping. I've dreamed of a cream-color Smeg fridge since we moved here. But on Crazy days there was a similar Gorenje fridge for only third of the price. And we ended up buying it, yaiks! Well, we still have to wait two months to get it, they had sold out the remaining stock.

Practising face-painting

Practising face-painting

Jotain suht yksinkertaista, ettei lapset ehdi hermostua. Varsinkin pojille minulla on vaikea keksiä mitään.

I also bought something a little less expensive. I've promised to do face-painting at a summer event in July. Which is something I've never done in my life. But I thought it's relatively easy to learn. I found a basic set for a few euros and now I've been practising on myself and people close to me. I've done clouds, lightnings, bunnies and butterflies.

But now I need your help. If you have any ideas what else kids might like, I'd love to hear it! Something quite simple, so the children won't get nervous waiting. Especially boys, I have a hard time coming up with subjects for boys.

Mummi, minä ja autottomuus / Happy cleaning and no cars

Happy cleaning

Happy cleaning

Today I went shopping for dishwashing stuff. I've drooled over the Mummi ja minä (Finnish for Grandma and me) dishwashing liquid online and now I finally made it downtown to get it. They also had a dishcloth of the same series that was too cute not to buy! And it doesn't hurt that the Mummi ja minä products are eco-friendly and safe. Oh, and I also got the House Doctor rack for dishwashing liquid and brush I've been dreaming about. I was happy to find it on sale so close to home.

Happy cleaning

Kotimatkalla hain lisää harmaata Permoa. Meillä on lattianmaalausurakka kesken.

On my way home I got some paint, I'm painting the foyer floor. Panu is on sick leave because of back problems for third week already, so he can't move much. I never thought how big a change it can be when the other one can't for example walk the dogs or drive the car. I don't have a driver's licence so now I have to walk everywhere. We live about a half an hour walk from the city center (if you can call it city... We live in a very small country) and I always thought you don't need a car living here. And I was perfectly fine before I met Panu, living a car-less life. But at that time there was only me and Muru to feed. Now I realize we are so dependent on the car. Luckily our dogfood shop does home deliveries, so our dogs get fed :) Carrying 15 kilos of meat by foot might be too much.

How about you, are you dependent on the car? Or am I the only one without a driver's licence? I'm actually quite shocked about this, since I always thought you don't need a car, you can walk, ride a bike or take the bus. I try to think of this as a phase to be environmentally friendly and good for keeping fit, but I do hope Panu gets better soon.

Tervetuloa kotiin / Welcome home Eames Hang it all!

Welcome home Eames Hang it all

Vihdoinkin se on täällä! Yli vuoden toivomani Eamesin Hang it all -naulakko on viimeinkin päässyt meille, kotiin, seinälle joka on sitä odotellut.

Mitä teillä on toivelistalla?

Finally it's here! My wait is finally over, the Eames Hang it all rack came home to us. It's been on my wishlist for over a year, I can't believe now we have it. I get in a good mood everytime I see it. Unfortunately the staircase is the darkest place in our house, so it's difficult to photograph.

What's on your wishlist? Any longtime wishes? My mr. Eames is of course not the most profound wish, but little things can bring joy too, right?

Pikku Varpunen

little sparrow

Yesterday I got mail from Varpunen, a little sparrow and a squirrel. The other one is a present, the other stays here. I hope the recipient of the present doesn't read my blog. Well the actual recipient hasn't been born yet, but let's hope his or her mother doesn't see this either.

Antiikkimessuilla / Antique fair

We spent most of the weekend cleaning and renovating but sunday we went to the antique fair. We are looking for a wardrobe but they didn't have much furniture. Instead they had loads of Finnish design glass and some really cute vintage Arabia cups and plates. Those were the things that interested me most but there were also lots of old books, jewellery, art and old coins.

We ended up getting a little ceramic owl and yellow vintage Nanny Still Tzarina jug and glasses. I thought they would go together with the red vase I have. I got the vase over ten years ago at a thrift store and paid 5 Finnish marks, which is less than one euro. I found out quite recently that it's actually Finnish design glass by Tamara Aladin. Similar vases were sold at the fair for 75 euros. I just bought it because it was a funny looking vase but it seems to actually be worth something :)

Nyt loppu valitus

hang it all

hang it all

hang it all

Minna vinkkasi, että nest.co.uk:ssa on alennusmyynti ja Hang it all on -20% alennuksessa.

As some of you might heard I've been coveting and moaning over the eames hang it all for over a year. Basically since we moved here I've thought it would fit here just perfect. And today I've finally made the decision to get one. Minna tipped me that nest.co.uk was having a january sale and the hang it all was -20% off. Which is great because it's almost half the price than what you'd pay for it in Finnish stores. But now I still have to wait for a month for it to arrive...

Järjestäytymistä keittiössä

organizing the kitchen shelves

organizing the kitchen shelves

I wanted to get some clarity and organization in our kitchen so I was happy to find the jars on sale. The cloud sticker labels are from the lovely Varpunen. Got to love her blog and little shop. For a bread box we found the Taika metal box by Klaus Haapaniemi. I'm such a big fan of his illustrations.

Hetki nörtteilylle

lacie brick

lacie bricks

I'm going to be a bit nerdy now. I've been meaning to make back ups from my files for ages but I never get around to do it. Even though I've heard so many stories about destroyed hard drives. So yesterday I finally managed to buy one. And found the cutest hard drive ever! It's the lego-like LaCie Brick. It was a hard choice between the red and the white but finally the white won. Later I can get the red one and another white maybe and stack them on my desk :)

happy new year

Näin meillä vietettiin uutta vuotta, sängyn pohjalla. Minulle nousi vähän kuumetta eikä sitten jaksanut tehdä oikein mitään. Mansikki otti rakettien paukkeen ihan rennosti, tuskin korvaansa lotkautti. Muru oli hermostuneempi. Pihalla meni raukka kellarin portaisiin piiloon. Mutta sisällä otti ihan rauhallisesti sekin. Olikin melkoista pauketta koko ilta kun kaikkialla ympärillä räjäyteltiin.

Toivottavasti teillä meni oikein mukavasti uuden vuoden aatto, ja toivottavasti uusi vuosi tuo tullessaan kaikkea mitä siltä odotatte. Olette ihania kaikki! <3

This is how we spent New Years Eve. I had a little temperature so we stayed home and took it easy. Hope you all had a lovely year and I wish all the best for the New Year 2010! And thank you so much for visiting my blog and leaving your lovely comments, it means so much to me :)
